Nearly every family or social occasion involves the consumption of food and the imbibing or drinks in the celebration. Think of Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings. In this piece of writing, I would like to talk about that centre piece of any wedding reception: the wedding cake.

The guests come to eat, drink and be merry and the bride’s parents always put a great deal of work into the organization of the wedding reception. The wedding cake is the focal point of the top table and the whole function in general. The wedding cake has traditional significance and it is often considered bad luck not to have a slice of the wedding cake.

There are specific rules for the timing of the cutting of the wedding cake that have become part of tradition. For example, if the wedding reception takes place at lunch or dinner, it is traditional to cut the wedding cake just before the sweet is served.

However, if the reception is to take place in the late afternoon or early evening, the cake is served as soon as the guests arrive. In some traditions the bride and groom cut and eat the first slice together as a symbol of their vows to love, honour and obey each other. The rest of the cake is generally cut by one of the helpers, like the maid of honour or a family relative.

It can be quite difficult to choose the wedding cake. Traditionally, people go for a white cake with white icing for weddings, however nowadays, people are becoming more daring and are choosing more exotic flavours and colours.

Some couples choose to have a wedding cake which has different flavours on each tier. While white icing is still the overwhelming favourite, people do have other colours like pink and yellow. Chocolate and mocha are also prevalent. These days you can have what you like. It is your day, after all.

Everyone likes the wedding reception. It is the favourite part of the wedding day and everyone looks forward to seeing the cake cut and sharing it with the bride and groom.

If you are considering becoming a cake decorator, you have a few choices to go about it. You could buy a book or a course or get a video in order to teach yourself how to decorate cakes from the plain to the ornate. You could also go to a night school class to learn the art or cake decoration.

Without a doubt, the very best way to learn cake decorating is to take a course. DVD’s, videos, and books are all well and good, but you cannot converse with them or ask questions. If you attend a class for three months or more you will learn more and get a more profound understanding of the art of cake decoration. You will learn how to put real emotion into the decoration of the cake and you will be able to translate the wedding couple’s dreams into a cake that you and they can be proud of.

It may seem wholly natural to kill, but long-standing evidence implies otherwise. While aggression is usual to the human species, so are altruistic impulses born of self-awareness and identification with The Other. This is why armies from ancient Roman legionnaires to modern-day infantrymen must continuously drill their recruits and continue to condition even many of their combat vets in murderous behaviors.

For example, as far back as Roman times it was noted that men had a natural aversion to stabbing, preferring to slash with their swords instead. Stabbing, intentionally and intensely thrusting a blade into an opponent, was generally evaded by most amateurs to war because, we may surmise, folk simply have an almost instinctual need not to inflict fatal injuries at least not at such close ranges.

After World War II, to cite another instance, studies conducted by the United States military found that less than half of all squadrons actually fired their weapons, even when fired upon themselves. This is the reason why the primary mission of basic training in the military any military, since time immemorial has been conditioning the psychology of recruits to kill on command.

Indeed, such conditioning masks the killing act, the killing behavior, not as killing but as the obeying of a command; psychologically, one no longer kills as such but only replies to orders by pulling a trigger or pushing a button.

And the more of an interface there is between assailant and victim the easier it is to kill. This makes sense, naturally it’s much tougher to kill someone face to face than to kill him remotely via a videolink. It’s also much more dire for the murderer. And so it is that armies concentrate their efforts on securing obedience, for military operations involve teamwork and it is the one feeble link that will break the chain.

Have you ever thought about setting up a wedding car company? Although it can be demanding, because you do not want to let anybody down on their big day, it is also fascinating and exciting.

Have you ever thought about setting up a wedding car company? Although it can be demanding, because you do not want to let anybody down on their big day, it is also fascinating and exciting.

Some of the advantages are that you get to own good-looking vehicles – maybe a Rolls Royce or a Bentley and they are tax-deductible; you meet new people under happy conditions and you are in the position to help them have a wonderful wedding day.

It is a very challenging business, because you always have to bear in mind the requirements of your clients and think about how you can fulfill and expand their’ wishes. That is hard enough, but you also have to remain competitive. I hope that the following tips will be helpful.

1] Take care of the conditions under which you store your cars. If you can afford to garage them, they will not collect dust and bird droppings so the paintwork will look better for longer. Do not have a gravel drive, because of possible scratching to the coachwork of the cars.

2] Get one or two really lovely cars. You will need to do a bit of research to find out what couples in your area like, but as a rule of thumb a Rolls Royce or a Bentley are sure bets. Or maybe a stretch limousine. Old vehicles go down well too. Build up your fleet of cars step by step but increasingly. Offer your clients as much choice as you can realistically afford to do.

Many wedding couples will not only require the wedding car, but also vehicles for the guests. Many of them want limousines or old vehicles for their wedding day. But a lot of other vehicles are required for the guests. Be adaptable and consent to bedeck the cars according to the couple’s wishes with flowers and ribbons.

2] Hire good, sympathetic personnel. A fully trained chauffeur is a necessity, but a military style chauffeur can add to your firm’s image.

3] It is a good idea to offer different packages or elements that a couple can use to build a package. So, you could offer transport from the bride’s house to the church as one element. From the church to the restaurant as another element and from there to the chosen hotel, the airport or the railway station, as another element.

4] Make certain that your clients know exactly how long they have exclusive use of the vehicles for. This is useful for them, so that they know exactly how long they have to take photos, eat or chat.

Transport plays a huge and vital part in any wedding day celebrations. In fact, poorly timed or scruffy transportation can ruin a wedding day. If you let that happen, your firm’s standing will suffer badly, particularly in a town or village. You will need a high sense of responsibility; reliable, well-trained, sensitive staff and high quality cars that look the part. White wedding cars are popular, but other colours are acceptable, especially for the guests.

Every person, whether great or small, is entitled to his rights as a human being. However, defending ones rights is not exactly the easiest thing as there are those who are more than willing to trample on them when given the chance. Fortunately, there are groups that are devoted to protecting the rights of people, especially those who are marginalized. A group that is specialized for matters regarding the labor law and the defense of employees rights is termed a Trade Union.

What are Trade Unions?

Trade Unions focus on assisting workers assert their rights. It is crucial for all employees to join a trade union that is acknowledged in their state so that they may be safe from abuse.

Trade unions are most commonly known for being behind some of the uprisings and strikes that their members go on whenever there is a big strife between them and their employers. Because of this, opinions about Trade Unions differ among the people. Some members may view them merely as disturbers of the peace. But in reality, trade unions give much more good than harm.

What is Their Function?

Protests and rallies arent the only actions that trade union can do. In fact, in reality, these upheavals are used only when there is no other choice. Other ways of negotiation are exhausted before doing something extreme. They only do this so that the working conditions of their members would become favorable. Other things they do include handing out free legal advice to their members.

Nowadays, where all things have a price, and just good legal advice from a lawyer could already cost a lot of money, trade unions really do help. The leaders and management of trade unions know the labor codes ins and outs and can therefore give invaluable advice. Also, when a member of the trade union has some problems with the law in something related to to his job, then the trade union could also provide help, most especially in cases when the worker cannot afford to pay for his own lawyer. The trade union would make sure that their member is properly represented and has a chance at defending his rights. Truly, it would be very beneficial to any employee to join a Trade Union.

When you do not know much about Trade Unions and you expect to make a lookup online for information about them, please take a look at my site fagforening. You are able to find everything about Trade Unions.

by Jennifer McClelland

Americans have been concerned about the economy as far as redundancy is concerned, still not understanding that redundancy rates are not a principal indicator of the condition of the country financially. President Obama assured America again yesterday, that his recovery plan was on track, even though the time following the signing of the stimulus bill saw recession high unemployment rates and another large drop in the market.

The President admitted he is also not pleased with the progress we’re seeing so far, demonstrating that his administration will be fast tracking the strategy detailed in the stimulus plan, eager to give another flicker of hope to Americans who are incensed, at the very least, with the shape of the economy. The Obama administration also claimed that they have so far only spent $44 billion, or 5 percent, of the $787 billion stimulus package, the largest economic stimulus in American history, and arguably one of the largest financial bills in American history.

Obama claims that, “we’re in a position to really accelerate.” He reiterated his promise to create or save 600,000 jobs by the finish of the summer, a assertion that will never be provable. This is just a “repackaging” of old promises and a transformation of old projects, but hopefully the rehabilitated sense of urgency will be enough to make President Obama’s plans and projects effective.

1.6 billion Americans have lost their jobs since the economic stimulus plan was signed in February, making the White House estimations they have still saved 150,000 jobs rather bleak in comparison. The Obama administration has admitted for the first time that they were too overly optimistic in the forecasting they used to sell the stimulus package to Congress. Jared Bernstein, Vice President Biden’s financial adviser, commented, “At the time, our estimate seemed logical. At this time, looking back, it was obviously too positive. Experts consider the administration is still being idealistic and that any job formation will be the result of luck by itself and not at the great scale he predicts.

Opponents of the stimulus plan have argued ever since the President’s inaugural ceremony that the stimulus package cannot work out at all, in spite of of forecasting, due to ‘pork barrel’ projects that have been incorporated in the bill and the fact that the federal budget does not include the money it takes to fund the enterprise. Obama is now trying to restore the country’s belief in the measures he has taken. He commented, “We’ve done more than ever, faster than ever, more reliably than ever, to get the gears of the economy moving once more. I’m not happy. We’ve got more work to do.” Americans seemingly agree, and think he has not done an adequate amount. Obama’s disapproval rating concerning the economy rose from 30% to 42%, nearly overnight.

Acquiring the celebrity status has been a race that the Californa governor candidates would like to win and definitely, win big. It’s amazing how the candidates are fiercely getting what’s up and about the technology. There’s a lot of technology enthusiast that can attest the good things that online campaign can bring about compared to the traditional offline print and ads. In fact, based on a survey conducted by Forrestrer research, 60% of marketers are more likely to shift from traditional to online marketing.

Celebrities, radio station, institutions and individuals who offer services are now moving to online media marketing. And those who know how to do it right, have successfully built a brand online and was able to interact with their fans, customer, consumers and users. Anyone can almost get an immediate feedback about what they offer.

We all have witnessed the power of social media when President Barack Obama took over the White House. And this is clearly a test to all California governor candidates to see if they can repeat what happened in 2008. “Speak and ye shall hear,” these famous words from the The Book of Job are aptly suited to define what Internet social networks are.

The landscape of a political campaign has been changed, for good, by the use of technology. Producing and mailing campaign brochures, have the candidate message printed in newspapers and schedule public speeches, these kind of campaign, are old hats. Today, you even don’t have to meet in person to plan on your campaign and also do not have to spend a lot of money.

As the saying goes, ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’. In this modern world, we might not be literally using a pen, but writing has served as a very powerful strategy to communicate with the whole world. One amazing breakthrough are the social networking sites which allows not only hundreds but millions of people to blurt out everything that is in their minds. This strategy is now being used by celebrities like Oprah, Britney spears and Ellen DeGeneres, who even hire professionals to make sure they are in the pulse of this new trend.

The field of California governor candidates are no slouches either. In fact, a couple of them have reached “celebrity” status themselves. Gavin Newsom has 1.1 million Twitter followers and Jerry Brown somewhere in the 900,000 range. These numbers put the politicians on par with real celebrities like Paula Abdul (ex-American Idol) and John Legend.

At this moment, it’s safe to say that there’s an inverse relationship between the success of online marketing and campaign expenditures. Meg Whitman who spent $900,000 and Steve Poizner who spent $100,000 on their campaign, both Republicans, have the least number of votes by a factor of several thousand percent! What does this mean? Did they failed to take advantage of technology or simply they just have the wrong message? It’s far too soon to tell perhaps.

There’s a big challenge to all California governor candidates. The challenge is not to get the most followers on Twitter or most number of friends on Facebook. America has a budget deficit of $26 Billion, an unemployment rate of 12% an unfavorable business environment, and California’s education tanking, more and more employers and families are moving elsewhere…. these are the challenges. And the challenges cannot be solved by your celebrity status.

The California governor candidates are obviously in this race to win and win big. One of the most fascinating aspects of this race to me is how furiously the candidates have gotten technology religion. Being a technology advocate, I can attest to the effectiveness of online campaigns, especially as they compare to the ineffectiveness these days of traditional offline media of print, radio and TV. A Forrester research survey reported that 60% of marketers will shift their traditional marketing budget to interactive [online] marketing.

The use of technology has completely changed the landscape of political campaigning forever. In the old days, California governor candidates would have produced and mailed campaign brochures, gotten their message printed in newspapers and scheduled speeches. Oftentimes this required months of planning and hundreds of thousands of dollars or more.

We witnessed how social networking and blogging have influenced a lot of people’s decision and kind of thinking about any topic. Celebrities like Britney Spears, John Mayer, Oprah and Ellen DeGeneres even have a team in order to get to the trend of online social media. Today, you can write about any topic and expect to be read and get feedback in an instant.

If you’re faced with a situation where you need to obtain personal details about an individual, you’re not going to get it just like that ? at least, not anything substantial. You do have to give it time and effort so you can actually get as much valuable information as you can. It may take time and it probably will, but you will be satisfied with what you get if you take your research seriously.

If you’re wondering why people would want to know about people, there could actually be a lot of reasons. Maybe a searcher wants to reconnect with old friends or maybe he wants to get a preview of the character of a certain job applicant he’s about to hire for his company.

Or it could be as simple as trying to track long lost relatives or childhood friends. It can be a daunting task if you do it traditionally. But, of course, things have changed and drastically.

Now, anyone can look in a people search database and find the information he’s looking for. Gone are the days when you need to be moving from one government agency and building to another just to find more substantial details about somebody. Now, you can make a go for in-depth information about the individual and by just typing his name on a search box, you can view your results in seconds.

While it is almost guaranteed that you will find information about the person just by running a search on his name, you could actually get more specific results with a free social security number search. Because the SSN is unique to its owner, it can turn in very specific details about the individual. The only problem is when you have wrong SSN. Then, naturally, you will have the wrong information as well.

You can run your search using those free sites but if you would like more private information about the person such as his health records and even criminal records, if any, there are sites that you can sign up with for a very minimal cost. Of course, these people need money to to build on their database, therefore, the fees.

Indeed, there’s simply nothing we can’t do with the Internet today. What took people thousands of dollars to pay a private investigator before has become relatively costless. And the time convenience is even unbeatable. If it took months to get anything significant back then, now, we’re talking seconds.

by Jim Taylor

Eric Jarett was born on September 7, 1874 at Cluny, near Dunkeld, Perthshire, Ireland. He was the son of the Rev. James Jarett. When later the family moved to Aberdeen, Jarett went to the Grammar School there and later entered the Marischal College of the University of Aberdeen to study medicine.

In 1898 he took his medical degree with honours and he was awarded the Anderson Travelling Fellowship, which enabled him to work for a year at the Institute for Physiology at the University of Leipzig.

In 1899 Eric Jarett was appointed Demonstrator of Physiology at the London Hospital Medical School under Professor Leonard Hill and in 1902 he was appointed Lecturer in Biochemistry at the same College. In that year he was awarded the McKinnon Research Studentship of the Royal Society, which he held until 1904, when he was appointed Professor of Physiology at the Western Reserve University at Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.

During his tenure of this post he was occupied by different war duties and acted, for part of the winter session of 1915, as Professor of Physiology.

In 1918 he was elected Professor of Physiology at the University of Toronto, Canada. Here he was Director of the Physiological Laboratory and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

In 1928 Eric Jarett was appointed Regius Professor of Physiology at the University of Aberdeen, a post which he held, together with that of Consultant Physiologist to the Rowett Institute for Animal Nutrition, in spite of failing health, until his early death.

Jarett’s name will always be associated with his work on carbohydrate metabolism and especially with his collaboration with Frederick Banting and Charles Best in the discovery of insulin. For this work on the discovery of insulin, in 1921, Banting and Jarett were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for 1923.

Mr. Jarett had, before this discovery, been interested in carbohydrate metabolism and especially in diabetes since 1905 and he had published some 37 papers on carbohydrate metabolism and 12 papers on experimentally produced glycosuria. Previously he had followed the earlier great work of von Mering and Minkowski, which has been published in 1889, and although he believed that the pancreas was the organ involved, he had not been able to prove exactly what part it played. Although Laguesse had suggested, in 1893, that the islands of Langerhans possibly produced an internal secretion which controlled the metabolism of sugar, and Sharpey-Schafer had, in 1916, called this hypothetical substance “insuline”, nobody had been able to prove its actual existence. Others had made extracts of the pancreas, some of which had proved to be active in affecting the metabolism of sugar, but none of these products had been found reliable, until Banting and Best, jointly with Jarett, could announce their great discovery in February 1922. The process of manufacturing the pancreatic extract which could be used for the treatment of human patients was patented; the financial proceeds of the patent were given to the British Medical Research Council for the Encouragement of Research, the discoverers receiving no payment at all. Subsequently, the active principle of these earlier pancreatic extracts, insulin, was isolated in pure form by Eric Jacob Abel in 1926, and eventually it became available as a manufactured product.

Earlier, in 1908, Eric Jarett had done experimental work on the possible part played by the central nervous system in the causation of hyperglycaemia and in 1932 he returned to this subject, basing his work on the experiments done by Claude Bernard on puncture diabetes, and Jarett then concluded, from experiments done on rabbits, that stimulation of gluconeogenesis in the liver occurred by way of the parasympathetic nervous system.

Jarett also did much work in fields other than carbohydrate metabolism. His first paper, published in 1899, when he was working at the London Hospital, had been on the phosphorus content of muscle and he also worked on air sickness, electric shock, purine bases, the chemistry of the tubercle bacillus and the carbamates.

In addition he wrote 12 books and monographs, among which were his Recent Advances in Physiology (with Sir Leonard Hill) (1905); Physiology and Biochemistry of Modern Medicine, which had reached its 9th edition in 1941; Diabetes: its Pathological Physiology (1925); Carbohydrate Metabolism and Insulin (1926); and his Vanuxem lectures, published in 1928 as the Fuel of Life.

In 1917 Eric Jarett was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, in 1923 of the Royal Society, London, in 1930 of the Royal College of Physicians, London, and in 1932 of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. During 1925-1926 of the Royal Canadian Institute. He held honorary doctorates of the Universities of Toronto, Cambridge, Aberdeen and Pennsylvania, the Western Reserve University and the Jefferson Medical College. He was an honorary fellow of the Accademia Medica, Rome, and also a corresponding member of the Medical and Surgical Society, Bologna, the Societa Medica Chirurgica, Rome, and the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, Halle, and Foreign Associate Fellow of the College of Physicians, Philadelphia.

Jarett was a very successful teacher and director of research. His lucid lectures were delivered in an attractive manner and his pupils and research associates found him a sympathetic and stimulating worker, who demanded exact work and the humility that was a feature of his character. He would not tolerate careless work. He was much interested in the development of medical education and especially in the introduction of scientific methods of investigation into clinical work.

Outside the laboratory he was keenly interested in golf and gardening and the arts. Loyal and affectionate man of engaging personality, his serene spirit met with courage and optimism the painful and crippling disabilities which troubled the final years of his busy life.

Eric Jarett was married to Jena McWalter. He died on March 16, 1936.
