In these tough economic times, we are all looking for ways to cut corners and save money. We often do little jobs around the house that formerly we may have left to tradesmen. Often, we can successfully do a little job like fix a leaky faucet, but sometimes we get stuck and make things worse. Installing a fitted kitchen is a perfect example of this.
When you watch an expert at work, they often make a job look so easy that we think, “I can do that.” Sometimes it’s true, of course. Not every job a professional tradesman does is difficult or requires specialized skills. That’s why they are able to trust an apprentice to do a lot of work. Other times, though, they make a technical job seem easy because they know the tricks that make the job go smoothly.
If you have ever seen professional kitchen installers in action, you may have been impressed with how quickly and efficiently they are able to work. They often get an entire kitchen installed in a single day. They can come in early in the morning, remove the old kitchen in a matter of hours and have the floor units in place by lunchtime. Often, only two tradesmen working together can accomplish all of this.
After their lunch break, they may tackle the kitchen bench tops or do the hanging units, depending on the requirements of the particular kitchen. You may notice that they use certain tricks in order to make their work go more smoothly. It looks quite easy to hang the wall cabinets when you watch them do it.
Unless they run into something difficult or it’s a very large kitchen, these two workers can often be finished with their side of the job in a single day. Everything is in place for the tiler, the plumber and the electrician. If they do have more work to finish, it’s usually just little things they can tidy up the next morning.
It all looks so easy. The home handyman is tempted to think he can do it, too. He orders a modular kitchen and has it delivered to his home. He gets to work filled with confidence that he can do the job as quickly as they did, telling himself that all it takes is the right tools.
Many of the first jobs are not difficult. Sliding the floor cabinets into place and fixing them together is an easy job and hanging doors is not that tricky, either. Other jobs, however, are not so straightforward and the completed work is sloppy and unprofessional looking.
These little mistakes can add up to one big headache. Often, a kitchen installer has to be hired to fix all your mistakes anyway. When you add it all up, you have saved little or no money and given yourself a big headache. It’s a better idea to hire an expert to fit your kitchen than to try and do it yourself!
