Simvastatin Tinnitus: The Link EXPOSED

by Thomas Coleman on December 6, 2009

The multinational Merck/Schering Plough launched Simvastatin (sim-va-stat-in) back in the January of 2008 to treat cholesterol related cardiac problems either singularly or in association with Ezetimibe and the brand name for the drug was Zocor. It is believed to lower the ‘bad’ cholesterols and triglycerides. This is believed to lower the risk of stroke, sudden heart attack or death resulting from coronary heart diseases. It increases the level of high-density lipoprotein that is considered ‘good’ cholesterol for all those who have problems of the heart, fatigue, dizziness, weakness, thrombocytopenia, headache, diarrhea, nausea elevation of CPK for skeletal related and neuromuscular problems, tummy pain (not more than 1%), pruritus, vertigo, dyspepsia, constipation and transaminases that goes up.

FDA’s test results for Simvastatin & Tinnitus

An uproar all over US from Simvastatin users caused the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to reveal their research results on the side effects of the drug. The tests were conducted on people who had Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia. The effect of drug was tested on the Atherosclerotic Process. In the first instance, a combination of high dose of Simvastatin and Ezetimibe was used. This was compared against the second case where Simvastatin was used singularly 720 people formed the sample group, and it was a double-blind, randomized test over a period that extending for more than a couple of years. Patients were exposed to Ezetimibe 10 mg/Simavastanin 80 mg and Simavastanin (Zocor) singularly. The key endpoint of the test involved the mean change in Carotid Intima-media Thickness (CIMT), which represents a surrogate endpoint, which is supposed to render a substantial reduction in the potential cardiovascular eventualities in the near future.

As an imaging experiment, it was not meant for clinical upshots, i.e. stroke, MI, etc. it was found out that Ezetimibe and Simvastatin used together reduced LDL cholesterol more efficiently than when Simvastatin was used on its own. However, both medications hardly changed the CIMT. The after effects were similar in both cases, too.

The use of Simvastatin caused serious side effects, and reports started pouring in from all over the US. Most patients complained about persistent buzzing in the ears, which is a sure sign of tinnitus, dizziness, fatigue, and many other problems. Numerous tests like ECG and blood count were carried out to isolate the symptoms. But all tests proved normal. So, it was generally concluded that the use of Simvastatin was causing all the side effects. A patient disobeyed his physician and stopped taking the medicine voluntarily. Magically, the symptoms of tinnitus vanished within three months.

Don’t be complacent if tinnitus does not show up immediately after Simavastanin is administered. Study following case history. A 52 year old male suffered delayed effects of Simvastatin. He was initially diagnosed with T2 Diabetes and was advised by the attending physician to take Simavastanin 20 mg per day. For the first six months, nothing happened. Then, the patient suddenly developed tinnitus along with vertigo and other related distressing symptoms. Immediate memory loss made his family life distressful, as he could not recall conversations with his wife. Loss of concentration resulted in his inability to drive. After running a series of tests like Blood test, ECG and even MRI, the root cause was still unknown as all tests yielded normal results. On a hunch, Simavastanin was substituted by some other drug. Voila! Immediately the tinnitus disappeared.

A 62 year old lady went to an ENT Specialist when she had ringing tone in both her ears. She had earlier been diagnosed with high level of cholesterol and occasional angina pain in the chest. Conventional medication prescribed Simvastatin 20 mg/day, which she started using, immediately causing the side effects. She was diagnosed with tinnitus in both the ears.

Tinnitus is thus caused by the administering of Simavastanin, as the medical histories prove. It may take a few days to a few months, but tinnitus is unavoidable as a side effect. There are other side effects as well, which are no less serious.

Finding the Right Treatment – Simvastatin & Tinnitus

Prescribing Simvastatin can result in serious side effects. Conventional medicine treats the symptoms, and remains oblivious to the root causes of the disease. Thus, it provides temporary relief to the symptoms, at the cost of harmful side effects, but can never completely cure the disease, as the symptoms almost always show up again. Holistic medicine on the other hand, finds out the root cause of the symptoms and cures them all – and there can be many such causes. And once this can be achieved – the symptoms vanish automatically.
